Fight Against Spammers

| July 14, 2012 | 0 Comments More

Last year we started our fight against spammers that were abusing the Lensroll directory with their scams, ripoffs and exploits.

Almost from the minute we opened the site back in 2007 they came a slithering by the hundreds. By 2011 we had about 29,000 spammer accounts in the database and growing daily.

The biggest factor in the amount of spammers getting registered was due mainly to my mistakes in not keeping with the updates to the script we use to run the site.

In my own defense the script has always been a work in progress and at the time there wasn’t much in the way of protection against spam. Most of the spam back then was never seen by the end users but I’ll tell you, it was a full time job just keeping the site clean.

Fast forward to July 2012. A snapshot of the sites anti-spam statistics show a whooping 374,000 registrations blocked from the site!

Man it feels good to beat them back without even breaking a sweat.

Since we started using StopForumSpam’s databases the Interweb’s has been good to us when it comes to keeping a tidy house but with all good things there are bad things that creep in. In this case the bad thing is registration woes.

Over the past month I’ve gotten a lot of emails from users reporting that they cannot create a account. The first thing I do is a quick search of StopForumSpam’s database and 9 out of 10 times they are in the database.

If you find yourself unable to create a account on Lensoll you can search for your email or IP in the StopForumSpam database. If either your IP or email  is in there you will not be able to create an account at Lensroll. Simple as that.

If you part of the 1% that isn’t in their database but still having problems registering at Lensroll give my a shout through the contact form and I’ll look into the registration details of you account.

In the meantime make sure to whitelist us. If you’ve registered but haven’t received an email, look in you spam folder. The system is not broken. I has never failed to send out a registration email.
