RocketMoms

rocketmomsI first noticed the Squidoo RocketMoms while sorting through submissions to Squoogle and Lensroll, and I must say I am impressed with the quality.

The use of the template, and inclusion into the group, is by invitation only. Prerequisites being 1) female (and I assume being a mother of a child) and 2) quality lensmastership (or should that be ‘lensmistressship?). It’s not available to ONLY Giant Squids. It doesn’t matter whether a person has 10 or 100 lenses, they have to be top quality.

Personally, I don’t mind segregation and exclusivity. All female gyms are established for a reason. I should know, I used to live next to one for 2 and a half years. :D

Side note: My home office was at the front of our house, our window had a reflective tint. So we could see out, but people outside could only see themselves. Good times. Though I did get to know the owner and was given a key to use the gym after hours. So sometimes rules are made to be bent.

Exclusivity works, though lets not get bogged down in political debate or draw comparisons to bias based on race. Having social groups according to age, sexual preference, and other traits allows people with the same interests, opinions and beliefs to enjoy each others company. If a person doesn’t like it, then they should keep looking for a group that will cater to their tastes.

And yes, it can suck to be on the outer, but when you team up with a group of dynamic people in an inner circle of sorts to be part of an online initiative it can create magic. I know that if I was running a site (and I have had many ideas simmering on the backburner) it would be invitation only, or involve an application process. That would cut down on the amount of crap that is generated.

I wonder though, does Squidoo HQ have on the drawing board a similar initiative catering to the men? And what would they call it?

RocketDads doesn’t seem right (I’m still trying to figure out the ‘rocket’ bit in RocketMoms but maybe one day it’ll become as branded and meaningful as Squidoo, Yahoo and Google). I think there should be Tool Shed Dads (or Tool Shed Guys) and armed with a mandate to write ‘How To’ articles accompanied by photos of actual projects. Maybe interspersed with video snippets illustrating short cuts or tips which words or still images can not sufficiently explain. Bonus Lensrank boost if they include an outtakes video at the end with bloopers and other Tim The Tool Man Taylor type mishaps as the final module.

But getting back the RocketMoms initiative… I am surprised to see that the number 1 ranked lens (Are you a Stay at Home Mom Interested in Earning a Monthly Income?) which has been so for a very long time, hasn’t been retroactively fitted out with the RocketMoms template. And I could be wrong but it seems that Janet21 hasn’t been badged as a RocketMom at all. Now there is a real travesty, because she probably is ‘the smartest woman on the web’. I just hope that Squidoo HQ haven’t dropped the ball on that one.
