My parents - Josef Thiemermann and Johanna Nowak - lived through some of the most difficult years in European history. They've succeeded against seemingly insurmountable odds - from the Russian front line in WWII, to famine and despair in the Austrian homeland; from traveling for weeks on a cramped freight train, to a new beginning in post-war Germany.
